Clinical Hypnosis

http://www.thebestweightlosssolution.com/stop-smoking/blog

Hypnosis has always had a fascination and air of mystery about it. Unfortunately many people’s knowledge is limited to memories of stage hypnosis where they see people being “made” to do silly things seemingly under the hypnotist’s control.

Yet people who undergo hypnosis in a therapeutic setting are amazed at the results they achieve, they find it relaxing, are always in control, and feel really good afterward. I am writing this article to extend knowledge about Hypnosis and to bring awareness about the use of Hypnosis in a therapeutic session.

What sorts of issues can be resolved with hypnosis?

Hypnotherapists deal with a range of issues including: anxiety, insomnia, smoking cessation, nail-biting, hair pulling, weight loss, bruxism, stress management, anger management and many other issues that are presented by clients.  Let us have a closer look at how some of these issues are dealt with:

Anxiety

After a detailed history is obtained from the client the therapist studies the information to determine if there is some causal link for the onset of anxiety.

If there is then this is discussed with the client and a course of action is determined.

Often there are other cognitive techniques that can be put in place that help the client deal with anxious situations. This is especially so when anxiety leads to panic attack. Here the client is made aware of the physiological symptoms of panic. These can include increased heart rate, sweatiness, trembling and fear of losing control. For the most part these symptoms are common with the “fight or flight response”. In themselves the symptoms are harmless unless, of course they, are prolonged or continue over time.

The client is taught about the relevance of those symptoms and instructed on how to deal with them or eliminate them when they occur.

In most cases the client is asked to participate in a progressive relaxation that leads to a relaxing hypnotic trance during which therapeutic suggestions are given that assist the client to alleviate anxiety. The client is also led to mentally rehearse the techniques that were put into place to eliminate the unwanted symptoms. When treated with Hypnotherapy Anxiety States have a very favorable prognosis.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a prevalent condition in our modern world. Ask anyone you know and chances are that they have experienced insomnia in one form or another.

Once medical causes have been ruled out it is the therapist’s role to investigate further. Many people do not realize that drinking alcohol can bring about insomnia and that drinking coffee even during the day can cause disruption in sleep patterns.

Another leading cause is that in our modern day world people are mentally exhausted but their body has not exercised or undergone physical work. The result is that the mind wants to sleep but the body, needing activity, causes the mind to stay awake.

The experienced therapist should take a holistic approach to this problem. Once any obvious causes have been eliminated the therapist then concentrates on possible client self-talk or other mental activity that prevents onset or duration of sleep.

Once this has been defined the therapist then assists the client enter a hypnotic trance during which therapeutic suggestions are given to assist the client deal with any mental activity that prevent a good night’s sleep.
Quite often the therapist will also give cognitive techniques that the client can use to further assist resolution of the insomnia.

Smoking

The key element to quitting smoking is that it has to be totally voluntary. People cannot usually be made to do anything that is against their will. Therefore if a smoker desires to quit, the smoker must really want to quit. If the desire to smoke overrides the desire to quit, chances are the client will relapse.

One of the main elements in that assists the client to become single-minded about quitting is to educate the client about the harmful effects if smoking. Most clients have seen advertisements that illustrate the harmful effects of smoking and have become desensitized to them. When detailed information about how smoking affects major organs and systems in the body it is usually better understood and becomes more convincing.

The therapist should also help the client discover the possible causes or triggers that have brought on the smoking habit and suggest alternative ways that the causes or triggers can be dealt with. The therapist should also discuss with the client what the triggers would be that could cause a possible relapse. Strategies could thus be is put into place to prevent possible relapse.

Once all the information has been put into place the client is then relaxed under hypnosis and therapeutic suggestions given that will reinforce the strategies. The client is also mentally rehearsed to deal positively with events that could possibly cause relapse.

Weight Loss

Here again all medical causes should be eliminated. Hypnotherapy will assist best when the causes are due to behavioral, psychological or emotional factors. Sometimes these are not strikingly obvious to the client therefore some investigation by the therapist may be necessary. Hypnotherapy can assist with weight loss by:

• Raising hope and self-esteem
• Moderating eating behavior
• Changing eating habits
• Diverting attention away from fattening foods
• Reinforcing healthy food choices
• Increasing and reinforcing motivation to exercise
• Altering cognitions and mood states

Once all changes have been established, reinforced and maintained weight loss becomes inevitable.

Hypnotherapy is not limited to the above applications. Clinical hypnotherapy may assist with a number of other emotional issues. For more information on the suitability of hypnosis/hypnotherapy for your particular situation, consult your doctor.

Five Persuasive Arguments For Quitting Smoking Today And Possibly Saving Your Life

Five Persuasive Arguments For Quitting  Smoking Today And Possibly Saving Your Life

http://www.thebestweightlosssolution.com/stop-smoking/blog

These Five Persuasive Arguments should be enough motivation for you to decide today to quite smoking.

As we approach The Great American Smokeout, smokers need to face their addiction and quit smoking.  The sooner smokers realize the urgency of kicking the habit and stopping smoking for good, the sooner their bodies can start the process of undoing the smoke damage.  These are unquestionable side effects of smoking:

1. Heart Disease

Heart disease causes the most smoking related deaths. Smoking causes hardening of the arteries, (atherosclerosis) which blocks off blood and oxygen flow to the heart. Quitting smoking will significantly reduce your risk of developing heart disease. If you already suffer from a heart condition, stop smoking and your health will benefit almost immediately because the flow of oxygen to the heart will increase substantially in as little as 24 hours.

2. Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer causes more deaths than any other kind of cancer among both men and women. A staggering 87% of all cases of the disease are related to tobacco use, which means that this all too common, fatal disease is actually preventable. Stop smoking today and reduce your risk of developing this life threatening condition.

3. Stroke

Smokers are twice as likely to suffer a stroke as nonsmokers. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the United States, claiming over 150,000 people every year.  Don’t let yourself become another statistic-quit smoking now.

4. Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema

Smoking is the leading cause of both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, degenerative diseases of the lungs known collectively as COPD.  Although it is thought that approximately 10 million Americans have COPD, it is estimated that many more are yet to be diagnosed.  Research has shown that individuals with COPD who stop smoking can significantly reduce the risk of further complications developing and prevent more damage.

5. Oral Cancer

The term “oral cancer” encompasses mouth, head and neck cancers.  Up to 80% of all patients with mouth, head or neck cancers are smokers.

Todd Stofka, CH, MHNLP and founder of Philly Hypnosis has helped over 700 smokers become non-smokers in his ten year career as a Certified Hypnotherapist.  Stofka says, “The health risks associated with smoking are very well publicized. But smokers have a remarkable ability to block out the health warnings, close their eyes to the statistics and convince themselves that somehow, they’ll be ok.

Hypnosis helps eliminate withdrawal symptoms while making kicking the habit a relatively painless process.”

Quit smoking now and reduce your risk of developing these life threatening conditions immediately.

Todd Stofka says, “If you’re serious about quitting cigarettes, it’s essential that you face the truth about your destructive habit.  Instead of hiding from the statistics, educate yourself on the frightening truth of nicotine addiction and think about the harm you are inflicting on your body each and every time you reach for a cigarette.”

Why Does the Pace of Weight Loss Slacken with Time?

According to facts furnished by a recent study, people subjecting themselves to diet restrictions were observed to be losing weight rapidly during the initial stages. Despite adhering to the same diet regime, the pace of weight loss slackened during the following months. It is a common phenomenon most of us have to brave. Although many consider it contradictory to the fundamental theory of calorie consumed and calorie used, an explanation can be arrived at pretty easily.

Most importantly, the explanation does not choose to defy or negate any of the proven scientific theories we are used to.

Primary Concept behind Losing Weight

We are all aware that in order to shed those extra pounds, we would be required to consume lesser calories and burn even more. The resultant calorie shortfall will be the main factor responsible for the rate at which you would lose weight. Therefore, a deficit of 500 calories in seven days might help lose around a pound of weight within the same time period.

However, with decreasing weight, the calorific needs of the body also come down. Hence, despite sticking to the same diet, the calorie shortfall would dwindle. Hence, the pace of weight loss slackens too! Ideally, you should resort to stricter diet regimes for maintaining the pace of the weight loss. However, strict diets might not be advisable always. You should be able to cater to the vital requirements of the body besides choosing to lose weight. There are other factors too which are known to have an impact on the calorie shortfall quotient.

Explaining Latent Factors Associated with Calorie Shortfall

Dieting could be responsible for mitigating your metabolic rate as well. Therefore, it is imperative not to skip meals as it leads the body to assume there is a shortage of food. Thereafter, your body loses the ability to burn calories rapidly and the shortfall depletes further.

In addition, you could consider resorting to daily exercise for burning more calories and keeping this shortfall from reducing. Any physical activity from normal to moderate intensity can be considered for burning calories faster. You could also consider endurance training for building muscle mass which escalates the calorie burning process further.

Therefore, the onus of fine tuning your daily regime for ensuring an optimum calorie shortfall, resides with you. You could eat less, choose to workout extensively or resort to the muscle building exercises. Remember, maintaining a reduction in calories still remains the key deciding factor for the rate of weight loss. Therefore, your calorie count should be maintained at any cost.

Gradual Weight Loss is Advantageous

Despite the fact that this waned pace of weight loss could actually demoralize you, gradual weight loss is in fact advantageous to health. This is especially when the body follows a substantial reduction spree. It helps you to come to terms with your newfound self image both physically and mentally. Therefore, maintaining yourself and not allowing further accumulation of extra pounds becomes easier.

Texting for Teen Weight Loss—Does it Work?

Technological innovations and communication strategies have invaded the lifestyle of the modern day youth in more ways than one. Gone are the days when messages and calls were merely used to reach out to people and express thoughts and views. Today, text messaging is being widely used for several other innovative and life changing purposes.

According to a news feature published in the LA times, text messaging is actually being used to ring in healthy lifestyle alterations in the lives of the present day teenager. The news feature elaborates on a study which had been conducted by the research analysts of the University of Michigan using a focus group comprised of overweight or obese youth in their teens. The findings of the study have been published in the “Obesity” journal. It elaborated on the ways in which text messaging could bring about changes which could ultimately contribute to weight loss.

The study was led by a group of research analysts from Michigan University who possessed strong conviction that text messages, if suitably drafted and created, could provide assistance to teenagers for sticking to healthier lifestyle choices. For carrying out the analyses, four distinct groups comprising of 24 females and males were considered. These were individuals who were already under some sort of weight reduction plan.

The group was sent four distinct styles of messages. These included some testimonials, tips for promoting weight loss, questions which provided for feedback, queries for assessment and evaluation, specially drafted messages with unique content as well as recipes for a fat free yet delectable meal plan. Once these messages were sent them, the various responses received were studied in greater detail.

Messages which bore instructions from fellow weight watchers were accepted with readiness. These also included recipe details and discussion on strategies for losing weight. Text messages with a positive tone were also absorbed readily. These even included the usage of emoticons and exclamation symbols. However, popular online lingo like “LOL” weren’t as openly accepted.

Other messages which didn’t go down well with the focus group were those which bore a mention of unhealthy delights. Even though they were mentioned in reference with healthier options, it led to uncalled-for craving in some of the targeted teens. Basic assessment queries like, “what do you understand by being healthy?”, “how does screen time fare in your objectives?” and “how could reducing it bring positive changes in your health?” also found very few responses. They were not highly preferred owing to their generalized nature. However, in certain cases, the mode of delivery was considered responsible for non-acceptance.

Specific versions which went to the crux of the issue received better responses. These were the ones which dealt with healthy eating habits and seeking the right directives for successful weight loss.

Subsequently, research analysts have proceeded to analyze the impact these messages are likely to have on weight loss. Studies pertaining to the effect of text messaging on adopting flu vaccines, quitting smoking etc. have already been conducted. By far, text messaging reminders in such cases have proven to be quite effective.

Oprah Winfrey Explains – How to Beat Emotional Weight Gain

It is important to get to the root cause simply because it would eventually determine the fate of the weight loss program. Dealing with the problem in a matter of fact manner might result in temporary weight loss, but sustainable solutions would be difficult to come by. Often, the right way to start would be with a few self introspective questions to delve into the actual reasons responsible for weight gain.

We are all aware of the stupendously successful Oprah Winfrey weight loss regime. Her journey from the fat to the fit is a well publicized one. Oprah, during the course of her battle with the bulge, accidentally chanced upon the concept of emotional weight gain. She was successful in unearthing the true causes behind weight gain and could therefore devise excellent solutions for the same.

Oprah states that the actual cause of weight gain in her life was the lack of balance between work and pleasure. With too much work and no time for self indulgence, what she was suffering from was a lack of self care. Like many of us, work predominated her life and the regular mundane activities had actually become “life” per se. Oprah states, that if such is the case, it is you and only you who can step in and reclaim your life. It is not the slim frame you are craving for, what you actually want is to have the balance back in your life.

She goes on to elaborate that the best way to combat emotional weight gain which has been linked to such underlying causes, is by spending more time on your own self. Ideally, you should start with moderate physical activity, around 30 minutes to 1 hour each day, for about 5 to 6 days a week. When you start getting active and indulge in healthy food habits, a sense of reorder sets in. It’s like rearranging the moments of your day, right from the start. This provides for more free time to spend on emotional and spiritual work.

Positive thinking in turn, helps in conquering this sense of imbalance completely. The more you are motivated to care for yourself, the more you’d love your body and strive to improve it.

Like Oprah, most of us are not really keen on sporting that perfect 10 figure. It is just that most of us do not realize it. All we want is to reach a weight which our body can comfortably hold. This will keep us fit and healthy, and that’s exactly what we are looking to achieve. We actually crave to be able to accept our bodily frame with complete positivity and do what we can to keep it fit and healthy.

As Oprah suggests, it is the love and care that we need from our near and dear ones to help us feel healthy and complete. At the end of day, it is all about loving our existence and looking for ways to make us happy.

Weight Loss and Personal Emotions –With Oprah

Like many dieters, Oprah Winfrey struggled to become her ideal weight. When everything else had failed to yield results, making changes in your usage of language could make a huge difference in the battle against the bulge. For example, the term “weight loss” could also be rephrased as “an inclination for making positive changes in the body”.

The idea is to empower our minds to bring about a physical change for the better. Delving into the root of emotions responsible for driving this weight loss program could also perhaps come in handy.

Weight loss isn’t a week long or even a yearlong affair. It is about changing your perspective towards a lot of things, forever. When perceived as a short term goal, weight loss would be followed by counterproductive weight gain in the subsequent months. Therefore, you should be able to make unalterable changes in your lifestyle and attitude for being able to remain slim forever.

Changing your psychology would also depend on finding answers to some very crucial questions. Why do you want to lose weight for instance? What is it that makes you yearn for the life of a slim person?

Look for specific answers and not generic responses. Put a finger on the situations which make you long for a trimmer frame. Wouldn’t you want to know what it is to look fashionable, before you age? Wouldn’t you want your kids to be weight conscious as well? Wouldn’t you like to feel proud of your photographs instead of cringing at them?

Think of all the reasons surrounding your weight which has made you feel awful. Find 3 of these and 3 more for looking better.

Weight gain for instance could be blamed on several aspects. It is not solely about a low BMR or eating too much. For the famous Oprah Winfrey for instance, gaining weight had been directly associated with inability to find the right balance between work and play.

“I was always a huge TV freak. Being planted on the couch with my favorite assortment of snacks and a glass of wine was something I could die for. I hated any sort of physical activity. In fact, I used to plead sickness to stay away from any sort of sporting activity in school. That was around 10 years ago. This wasn’t a simple case of feeling lazy and tired. The actual reason was the embarrassment I felt in my shorts. My thighs were fat enough to cause a friction when I ran, giving rise to painful rashes. So basically, I stayed away from public displays of physical activity because I hated the way I looked. Even the school report card declared me “obese and overweight”. To be precise, I was ashamed of myself,” Oprah recalls.

The challenge for Oprah was to set an example for those she coached. She couldn’t talk about sticking to a healthy active regime and indulging in workouts with others unless she became a role model to them.

So, how did Oprah Winfrey finally manage to conquer emotional weight gain and progress towards sustainable weight loss?

Find the answers in the next part of this series of “How to Beat Emotional Weight Gain.”
